City Vibes or Beach Bum? You choose. Just Keep it Mindful!💫

There’s a simple art to getting your day off to the right start. Or at least being able to handle whatever stress the day throws at you. The answer? A mindful morning spent outdoors. This is because mindfulness is incredibly beneficial for emotional resilience, relaxation, and clarity, (especially during seemingly un-figure-out-able moments).

Quick question: would you prefer rushing out on autopilot to join a sea of brake lights?

OR a serene mindful morning spent outdoors.

Sounds sooo obvious right? But, I used to be part of those queues. And a hot mess of anxiety. By the time I made it to work. And before that… stuck like a sardine in an underground tube somewhere in London. Sorry (not sorry), but no one or nowhere is worth compromising your health.

And, though I wish this post could just magic away rush hours, Bah, it can’t! But an outdoorsy mindful morning routine is the next best thing. Talking of which, I got a fun fact for you. 🤓 Studies by medical journals have concluded that spending time outdoors amplifies your anxiety-busting, immune system-boosting, positive-vibe-lifting abilities.

So if you do want an outdoorsy mindful morning routine…💡here are 5 ideas. Lets get intentional.

5 Ideas for an Outdoorsy Mindful Morning Routine

Mindful Mornings by the Sea (or Rivers, or Lakes)

Being in Malta, we are lucky that we are surrounded by endless sea. Buuuut a river or lake is equally beautiful. Especially at sunrise. Do you see where I’m going with this? Yep, it’s time to take it to the beach (or lake. Or river.) and watch the sunrise from the water. Mornings spent by water aren’t just about witnessing nature’s beauty, but the benefits on nervous systems. Especially ragged anxiety-riddled ones. I’ve spoken about the benefits of the sea before, but I’ll never tire from telling you again. The whooshing sounds of the waves soothe stress levels, reduce inflammation-inducing cortisol levels, and give you that calming slice of zen, needed to slay the day. Not to mention all that vitamin D. Plus, this seemingly simple everyday moment is just one more thing you can add to your gratitude journal.

Play Tourist, but Make it Mindful

When’s the last time you played tourist in your hometown? If you’re furrowing your brow, then it’s time to break the routine and get outside. Head to a place that intrigues you and begin a leisurely morning stroll. Valletta, with its cobblestone-narrowed streets is my top choice for a chance to (mindfully) sashay through its history. Once you get to your favourite though, simply absorb the charm of the place or the historical sites. Really watch the morning light dance on the architecture, and discover hidden corners, usually missed when you’re going at breakneck speed. Ah and here’s an idea to get you noticing more on your morning stroll—why not play I Spy? Yes with yourself. And no, not aloud! Unless, of course you want to. It’s fun and helps you mindfully notice all the little details and will steer you away from getting lost in your own thoughts.

Tranquil Gardens for Mindful Mornings

Don’t worry if you don’t have your own garden to potter about in, because there’s San Anton Garden, Howard Gardens, Lower and Upper Barraka Gardens and I’m sure, gorgeous public gardens wherever you are. These lush retreats offer a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a mindful start to your day. As the morning sun filters through the leaves, take in the beauty and serenity, away from the hustle and bustle. If you prefer, find a cosy corner and immerse yourself in a few pages of your current book. Let the natural surroundings enhance your reading experience, adding a touch of mindfulness to your morning routine. BTW, you could also get creative and try painting or drawing the scenery to help you notice more. Orrrrr, now could be the perfect time for a journal entry and setting your daily intentions 😉

Bird Watching Mindful Magic

Grab your binoculars (not mandatory) and head straight for nature. If you’re in Malta, be sure to head to Foresta 2000, Buskett Woodlands, Chadwick Lakes, Salina Salt Pans, Rdum tal-Madonna, Dwejra, Majjistral Nature and History Park —all offer excellent bird-watching spots. According to Malta Bird Life, Migratory birds from over 35 countries stop over on the islands 🤓. That’s a whole lot of birds and colours to notice. So why not enjoy their visit and melodies of their songs (and the beauty of nature)? Channel your own inner David Attenborough as you engage in this mindful morning activity. I’d love to hear what you discover. Feel free to tell me in the comments. My most exotic to date are flamingos. Well, baby ones.

It’s a Mindful Morning to, Simply Exist

It’s simple but, sometimes, the best way to enjoy a mindful morning is to “Just Be”. No need to get all fancy-schmancy, just find a comfortable spot, whether under a tree or on a beach, and focus on your breathing. Notice the sounds around you, (that includes your breath!) Whenever your mind wanders (no drama, but it will), just bring it back to whatever you are. Between the fresh air, sunshine, and your breathing, “doing nothing” will lead you to a state where you can handle anything the day ahead throws at you!
